“in a world full of minimalist stainless-steel kitchens, the almost decadent clutter of Helou’s room is a source of constant diversion. The walls are hung with oil paintings. Shelves are filled with jars of spices, pulses, candlesticks. There are action men dressed as waiters, sculpted busts, and a garden bench with a disembodied arm, complete with shirt sleeve and watch, draped over it. On the fridge door are paintings done by a friend, now a successful artist. ‘I said, “just paint what you would imagine finding inside my fridge!”’ she says, indicating the cartoons of severed limbs and jars of tarantulas. ‘We share the same sense of gruesome fun!’
