View from my room
I said it before and I will say it again: breakfast is my favourite meal especially when I am travelling. Those of you who follow me on twitter or are friends with me on facebook know that I am in America. First in Houston where I did a mezze demonstration for a group of high-powered women from the Women’s Initiative, then at my friend Rebecca‘s (one of the high-powered women who arranged for me to be invited) amazing house in Colorado which overlooks Pikes Peak. Rebecca knows me well and she knows how much I like American breakfasts. And because she had just acquired a waffle machine, she made me waffles this morning, which she served with crispy pepper bacon and lite butter and lite Auntie Jemima’s syrup for the calorie conscious! I am normally but not when it comes to maple syrup and real butter! Fortunately, I am here for another couple of days, so, I am about to get myself a bottle of maple syrup and real butter for us to have with tomorrow’s waffles!

What a good guest , anissa is and how frightfully terrifying it is to cook for someone as accomplished as she. But the waffles were good, if I say so myself, though the credit goes to my turn – upside- down waffle maker, to make 2 at once.

Rebecca – these waffles look incredible!!! Cannot wait for July – hopefully we can revisit these scrumptious waffles!!! Anissa – I am still talking about the delicious mezzies and the milk pudding. Enjoy CO and please come visit again soon!!!

Dear Anissa,
I just came back from Abou Dhabi, where i randomly got offered the delicious lgeimat you once wrote about in Saveur for the ramadan issue. I remembered it as soon as i saw them coming towards me in a big hot bowl. I ran to take some.. They were so good i could’ve eaten the whole bowl. This time they weren’t drizzled with date syrup, but with a sugar syrup to which they add some salt and a pinch of saffron (i got the recipe from the lady who was passing around with the lgeimat). The secret ingredient to their incredible texture was, according to her, (even though she insisted i shouldn’t tell anyone 🙂 was to use one cup of whole wheat flour, and one regular one, and most importantly : add half a boiled potato, mashed with butter, to the finished dough, mix well, and let it rest for another 30 mins.
I will surely try this. I also had their great khameer and a brownish halwah with sesame seeds and cardamom.
voila. it was a different experience to taste emirati food for the first time with already a clear idea about it, thx to you. it made it all more exciting.

what fun. i love lgeimat. i think your friend will not be happy to know that you revealed her secret to the world :). am sitting at the airport in houston waiting for a severely delayed plane to be repaired so that we can take off. v boring. hope the situation in lebanon is not going to deteriorate.

you’re right but i thought the percentage of people interested in what lgeimat are in the american breakfast post might be quite minimal 🙂 i may be wrong…but i thought you should know about this while the woman was giving me the recipe. anyway sahtein 3a albna right 😉 ?
Hope the hours went fast at the airport..The situation here is very tense at the moment.. very few cars in the streets, people are anxious, wondering if this is inevitable with what’s been happening in Syria so far..i guess you know what i’m talking about. Hope things won’t get worse.. will keep you posted 🙂
