serjilla-beautiful children copy

Today is Human Rights Day but there are many countries where such a notion does not exist including Syria where I used to spend my summers as a child; and where I ran culinary tours until the revolution started. So many children like these two beautiful ones have been killed by a monstrous regime that has no respect for human life let alone human rights, while many of those who have escaped death have been brutalised and humiliated simply because they want their dignity and freedom. Sadly, the International community is still nowhere near taking any meaningful action to protect the protesters. As a result, more people are killed, arrested, tortured, raped, being made homeless and this on a daily basis. The videos coming out of Syria are getting more and more gruesome. Today, and every day for that matter, I think of all the people I have met on my trips there, like the gorgeous children and the stern old man in the picture below and I wonder if they are suffering, or indeed if they are still alive. And of course I think of all those who are suffering and I would like to dedicate this post to my fellow Syrians wishing that a new order is established very soon where human and other rights are respected.

Really touched by this heartfelt post. What you mention about the inadequacy of international support is so true, but even at a micro level, I am guilty of often forgetting to remember such people in my prayers and continuing to live life ‘as normal.’ Thanks for the impassioned reminder Anissa, it’s collective reflections like this one that help to make people more aware, sensitive and…eventually, more demanding of their governments to intervene.
    Thank you.

Thank you so much for your personal story of your visits to Syria. Here in the U.S., most of us will never have the opportunity to travel there. As we learn more about events in Syria, we can understand the people’s yearning for the freedom to simply live their lives in peace. That yearning is common to people of all countries if we take the time to look and listen for it. I, too, pray for the Syrian people to have a stable, peace-filled country.

Awful situation, so troubling and difficult to understand why it needs to be like this and how things have got to change for the poor people living in such a way.
    A sad state of affairs…..

Hi, Anissa. A good day to you. I came across your site, wanting to learn more about Syria, the food basically, and its state at the moment. Thank you for your heartfelt post. I agree with you, in God’s will, a new government will soon rise, which takes into consideration the importance of human life. It has been more than a year now, and even if I am not Syrian nor an Arab for that matter, I still pray every night for the Syrian people, who are the victims of the current state of the country.
