A French friend once told me that dancing was the vertical expression of horizontal intentions. I can’t dance. So, if I need to express such intentions, I have to resort to other means! But Tahiya Carioca sure can. And the way she expresses it is beyond sexy, and without being in the least bit vulgar. The more I watch her videos, the more I wonder why I ever thought she was. It must have been my silly French convent school in Beirut that made me seriously prejudiced against belly dance then. Too bad. I missed out on seeing her in real life when I could have.

My sister and I made a pact that if we ever lived in the same city we would take belly dancing classes together. I find it freeing and sensual – and have always wanted to try it. Wonderful video!

Thought I’d add this link, from the Independent: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/the-secret-of-male-dancefloor-success-is-all-above-the-waist-2073174.html ‘The secret of male dancefloor success is all above the waist’, whence Jeremy Laurance reports on the findings of a study revealing that ‘upper body movement, not fancy footwork, is key to attracting women’. Guess we can allow for generalizations here.

How interesting! Looking forward to all your posts, including the ones on Oriental dance. Might I add a link to an illuminating article by Dr. A. Shay? My own interest in solo improvised dance in Middle Eastern contexts – performed by both male and female dancers – is that of an academic and an aesthete, and one with a pronounced Levantine bend

My late grandmother, who taught school in Alexandria as a beautiful and adventurous young woman defying her rigid DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) mother adored belly dancing, but it wasn’t until I watched this YouTube that I understood why. Thanks, Anissa, and hope to see you in Paris soon. xoAlec
