Here I am, holed up in my lofty eyrie, trying to concentrate on writing my book and staying warm — it’s freezing out there; we even had a mini snow storm last night which started just as I was leaving a lovely Xmas party in all my Eskandar finery. Not quite the weather to dress up so smartly.
In any case, as I was looking through my stash of Syrian photographs, deciding on which to choose, when I came across the video above. Watching it brought back memories of warm sunshine and the laughter we shared as we tried to decide which of the gadgets the guy was demonstrating worked. I decided on the courgette/zucchini corer although I haven’t tried it yet. I am not holding out much hope that I will be able to use it as adeptly as the vendor. Still, I wish I had bought a dozen to give away for Xmas .

I like these video. I passed these guys hundreds of times walking the streets of The Old City and I was never tempted to stop and watch let alone buy something. Now I will be buying one of these courgette corers on my next holiday 🙂

glad to hear this kano, and look forward to hearing if you can make it work. will be trying mine soon. it’s a shame i didn’t shoot a video of the vine leaf roller which is a miraculous machine, except that it rolls the leaves around the rice too tightly and i am sure that they come out dry as a result. no space for the rice to expand.

They sell cooking gadgets like this on the streets of Istanbul as well.
I love your books, by the way. I was introduced to them through the bookstores in Norway.

norway, how exotic. well, at least in this context. and you’re right, bil-balesh. i must look more closely when i am next in istanbul. i remember seeing the vine leaves rollers but not other gadgets. happy new year.
